Missions
Mycopunk mission types from Incursion and Ouroboros to Escalation and Paid Time Off, plus every region, threat level and unlock gate explained.
Introduction
Missions are where Mycopunk's upgrade grid gets paid for. There are several distinct mission types spread across the regions of New Atlas and its moonlet X11-B, and each one asks something different of you: Incursion wants you to descend as deep as the clock allows, Ouroboros strips your grid and makes you rebuild it, Escalation keeps escalating until you lose, and Paid Time Off simply lets you roam and decide when to leave. Threat level then scales the whole thing from 1 to 7, raising enemy health and damage alongside the rewards. Choosing the right mission for what you need, rather than the hardest one available, is the single biggest efficiency gain available to a mid-game player.
Mission Type Comparison
| Mission | What You Do | Pays Best In | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incursion | Descend through layers of hidden SAXON facilities | Antimass Substrate | Player level 13 |
| Ouroboros | Roguelike run with upgrades stripped at the start | Contraband rarities | None, but expect a full reset |
| Escalation | Wave-based mode with continuously rising difficulty | A special threat 7 reward | Complete Oxythane Breach |
| Paid Time Off | Free roam, your own objectives and extraction point | Materials and upgrades | None |
| Prized Possession | Short theft and recovery, currently rescuing Battery Barry | Quick loot per minute | None |
| Population Control | Clear areas of unusually high enemy density | Raw kills and drops | 1.0 normal mission |

Core Mechanics
Every mission starts with a drop from the Drop Pod and ends with an extract, and if nobody boards the pod the run counts as failed regardless of how many objectives were completed. Objectives vary by type: Incursion has you descend through layers of hidden facilities where deeper floors pay more Antimass Substrate, while Escalation sends waves of increasing difficulty with a special reward for finishing at threat 7. Mission modifiers are applied at launch and can help or hurt, and several missions are built around them, including one achievement for completing a run with at least four active modifiers. Procedural generation means the layout changes each attempt, so map knowledge transfers as region familiarity rather than memorised routes.
Advantages
The mission list covers almost every session length. Prized Possession and other short theft runs fit into twenty minutes, Regulated Rampage and Population Control are straightforward combat objectives, and Paid Time Off lets you set your own extraction point when you have an hour to spend. Incursion is the dedicated Antimass Substrate farm and rewards depth rather than speed, so a patient group can out-earn a fast one. Ouroboros gives you a roguelike reset that keeps the game fresh once your grid is complete, and the Ouroboros Blitz variant condenses the format into thirteen rooms for shorter sessions. Regions add further variety, from the Gravity Farm to the electromagnetic storms of X11-B.
Challenges
The threat ladder is not a smooth difficulty curve and the extraction rule punishes ambition hard. A run that completes every objective but misses the pod pays nothing, so pushing threat 6 for a marginal reward increase is a bad trade unless your build is genuinely ready. Several missions are gated behind unlocks that are easy to miss: Incursion only opens at player level 13, Escalation requires completing Oxythane Breach first, and the Shocklance sits behind the Overtime Assignment. Some regions are also much harsher than their neighbours, and X11-B's periodic electromagnetic storms disable abilities entirely, which invalidates ability-dependent builds without warning.

Quick Tips
Read the modifiers on the launch screen before you commit. A run with four stacked modifiers can be worth far more than a clean one, but a single modifier that counters your element turns a comfortable threat 5 into a wipe. Since modifiers are free information before you launch, there is no reason to discover a bad roll after you have already landed.
Do not treat Incursion as a race. Antimass Substrate scales with depth, so a team that clears three floors carefully out-earns one that sprints through two and dies on the third. Bring defensive modules rather than pure damage, and remember that the extraction window applies at the bottom of the facility, not just at the top.
Check the unlock gates before you plan a session. Incursion needs player level 13, Escalation needs Oxythane Breach completed, and the Shocklance needs the Overtime Assignment finished. Knowing which doors are still closed stops you from building a plan around content you cannot actually queue for yet, and it saves you from spending an evening on missions that were never going to be available.
